Welcome Back to School, CHMS PTO Families!

Dear CHMS Families,

We hope you had an amazing summer filled with sunshine, relaxation, and maybe just a little bit of avoiding the never-ending question, “Are we there yet?” As we gear up for another school year, we wanted to send a warm welcome back and share a few important updates to help you dive into the new year with ease.

Here’s what you need to know to kick things off smoothly:

  • Register for the PTO: Don’t forget to sign up for the PTO and update your info on Membership Tool Kit, our nifty school directory and app. This will help you stay in the loop and make signing up and paying for PTO activities a breeze.
  • Back to School Day: Mark your calendars for August 13th, from 8 AM to 12 PM! (Please see Dr. Brown’s email from Friday 8/2 for more detailed information) Swing by, get those school supplies sorted, medical forms submitted, spirit wear purchased and if you’re feeling adventurous, lend a hand and make a new friend. We would love some help on this day. If you’re able to help, please sign up by clicking the link above.
  • Join a PTO Committee: Want to make your student’s middle school experience slightly less awkward? (And maybe earn some bragging rights in the process?) Join a PTO committee! It’s a fantastic way to meet other parents and get involved. Sign up on Sign Up Genius, and our Committee Chairs will reach out when it’s time to get things rolling.

We’re excited to have you back for another fantastic year, and we can’t wait to see all the great things we’ll accomplish together. If you have any questions or need more info, feel free to reach out.

Here’s to a great start to the school year and we look forward to meeting you all on Wednesday August 28th for CHMS Curriculum Night

Warmly,

Elaine Chen Gilman and Susie Thorpe
PTO Presidents

E-Bikes in Hinsdale

Please see the below letter from the Hinsdale Deputy Police Chief.

Families of D181,

Please see the attached flyer for a summary of the recent ordinance implemented by the Village of Hinsdale regarding the use of Electric Bikes and other electric motorized devices. In order to be considered a legal low-speed electric bicycle, it must be equipped with pedals and an electric motor with a power output of less than 750w, as cited by Illinois State Law. Additional classifications and requirements are shown here. Only bicycles or legal low-speed electric bicycles can share the roadway with motorists in Hinsdale.

ANY product equipped with an electric motor with a power output GREATER than 750w is strictly prohibited on the public way. This includes scooters, one-wheels or any other electric motorized devices.

Be aware of deceptive advertisements from manufacturers that promote their products as "electric bicycles". If a product is equipped with a motor output of more than 750w and has two wheels, it is no longer considered a bicycle due to the high power motor. These products are considered dirt bikes, motorcycles, or, in some cases, a motor vehicle, despite its ability to be pedaled.

In Hinsdale, low speed stand-up electric scooters under 750w are permitted on the sidewalks, except they are NOT permitted on the sidewalks in the business district.

Please make a note that the ordinance pertaining to stand-up electric scooters and other devices under 750w are specific to Hinsdale. The legality and use of electric motorized devices will vary depending on the community you are operating them in. The Hinsdale ordinance mirrors state law as it pertains to low-speed electric bicycles.

Should you have any questions or need clarification, feel free to contact me directly.

Best of the Nest! Mrs. Kathy Cox

As you may recall, our amazing PTO sponsors our staff appreciation award, the “Best of the Nest” with a premium parking spot for the winner!

Staff members nominate each other based on:
Who has inspired you?
Who is making you a better staff member?
Who is making your day more enjoyable?
Who is doing great things for kids?
Who is consistently in your corner?
Who is implementing innovative strategies in the building?

This award continues to demonstrate the inspiring, kind, and giving staff we have here at CHMS. The incredible words that are written toward each other in response to the thoughtful actions taken are inspirational.

This month, Mrs. Kathy Cox (6th Grade Science) was our lucky winner! A few comments shared about her were:

  • Kathy, thank you for spearheading the 6th grade field trip each spring. Also, great work this year with Eco club, getting kids excited about science, and helping our school achieve Green Ribbon status! I appreciate your contributions to our 6th grade team. :-)
  • Kathy goes above and beyond not only to support her students but also her coworkers and our entire building. Thank you, Kathy, for planning such an amazing field trip for the 6th graders. & thank you for always being willing to answer my questions no matter how small. You are the best!!
  • Kathy is such an amazing human! She not only is a true environmentalist but is a wonderful teacher and co-worker. Kathy you are very much appreciated and your hard work and positive attitude do not go unnoticed! Thank you for all that you do for our students, community, and mother earth.
  • Kathy, you are amazing! Besides all the engaging activities you do with your students in science class you successfully juggle multiple other tasks, from leading the eco club to organizing the field trip and helping the school win the green ribbon. Your dedication and energy are truly inspiring!
  • EARTHWORMS, COMPOST, FIELD TRIP, ECO CLUB= GREEN RIBBON!

Congratulations again to Mrs. Cox and all of our nominated staff members!
